Forum Syd - organisations collaborating for global justice

Forum Syd
gathers two hundred Swedish organisations working with international development assistance and the forming of opinion on global issues. Member organisations consist of major popular movements such as Save the Children Sweden and the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation, as well as small societies run entirely on a voluntary basis. Forum Syd also works with a large number of organisations and networks worldwide. Our common aim is global justice.

Organisations in Sweden have a long tradition of working with the civil society in countries in the Global South and East. The aim of Forum Syd is to strengthen and develop this cooperation. Within the framework of Forum Syd organisations have the opportunity to exchange experiences and increase their own understanding, create new methods for development assistance and cooperate to achieve better results. Forum Syd also stives to impact the policies of the UN, World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) on issues of importance for world development such as trade and debt.

Forum Syd was formed in 1995 and is politically and religiously independent. Our operations are largely financed through the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida).

Areas of work:

- shaping of public opinion. We cooperate with other organisations to influence people in power on issues related to global justice, conditions for NGO development assistance and the role of civil society in development cooperation.

- capacity building. We arrange meetings, courses and exchanges of experience between people from different networks and organisations in countries in the Global North, South and East. We also produce publications on issues central to development work such as gender, environment, debt and trade.

- channelling of Sida funds. We provide advice and financial support to Swedish organisations that carry out development cooperation and provide information in Sweden on global issues.

Forum Syd has offices in southern and eastern Africa, Southeast Asia, Latin America and the Balkans, as well as representation in Ukraine and Belarus. Development work here is conducted jointly with local organisations.

Forum Syd has several different roles, but always one and the same objective: supporting civil society as a force for just and sustainable development in the world.

“We see poverty as a lack of power. Thus eradicating poverty is equal to fighting for democracy. Democracy in Sweden evolved when popular movements gathered individuals and gave them the tools to make their voices heard and demand respect for their rights. What we now witness is the same development in other parts of the world – a development Forum Syd wants to be part of and be inspired by. Together we can change the world!”

Inger Björk, general secretary Forum Syd
